League of Legends is kind of a big deal. With around 12 million summoners logging on everyday, LoL is, according to the infographic provided by Riot, the most played video game in the world (by hours played per month). Even so, LoL isn’t something that many gaming sites cover. It’s not often mentioned among the gaming community, despite its magnitude. That’s why we’re here to talk about just why LoL is so popular.
I started playing at the beginning of season 1, and have squandered entire nights on the fields of justice, rocking the mid lane instead of finishing college papers that were due the next day. That was two years ago. As an active player, here are my insights and opinions on why LoL is the most played game in the world.
Good graphics and audio don’t always guarantee good games, but they certainly help, especially if the game is F2P. The sound design for different champions and skills in LoL is so unique that a veteran player can follow what’s going on in the game without even looking at the screen, but of course that would be a real shame. LoL’s generous use of vibrant colors, gorgeous particles and detailed character models all add up to bring a spectacular visual millions of summoners log on to see everyday. Even if the game failed at everything else, LoL would probably still be acknowledged for setting graphical benchmarks. Seriously guys, the game is beautiful to behold.
Of course, for most gamers, stunning graphics is irrelevant when the game lacks a good story and engaging characters. The LoL lore is rich with history, and full of distinctive champions millions of players have come to love. Because LoL is a MOBA game (a genre that puts emphasis on player versus player gameplay), you’d assume the game to just adopt a lackluster story to justify the in game battles. But once you start playing the game, you will come to know and love the world that lies outside the combat. The realms of Runeterra are full of complex plotlines and intricacies that are not dissimilar to the scenarios in George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. One does not simply ignore LoL lore.
It’s fair to say that gamers (and people online in general) aren’t exactly the friendliest bunch you’d expect to meet. This is how LoL differentiates itself from other online games. The LoL community is kind and understanding. Because the gameplay fosters teamwork and encourages risk-taking. the people that play are usually helpful and respectful. League players strive to be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. Most LoL players treat others courteously, and reflect on their own actions instead of throwing out blames. Due to the competitive nature of the game, sometimes a bit of frustration and colorful language may come through the in-game chat, but all in all, League players are probably the nicest people you’re likely to meet, as far as online games go.
These are the 3 main reasons why I think LoL is the most played game in the world. It doesn’t matter if you’re new or experienced, the next time you hit that “Play Again” button, you’ll know why you did it. XD
